5 signs your business website is costing you clients

Your website is a sales tool, not a brochure

For most small businesses, the website was built once, a few years ago, and has barely been touched since. That might be fine if your business has not changed and your customers still find you the same way they always have. For most businesses, neither of those things is true anymore. If your website has not kept pace, it is not just sitting there quietly. It is actively turning potential clients away before they ever pick up the phone.

Here are five signs that your website is costing you business right now, and what each one means for the people landing on it.

Your site loads too slowly

If your homepage takes more than a few seconds to appear, a large share of visitors will leave before it finishes loading. Google PageSpeed Insights will show you exactly how your site performs and what is dragging it down. This is especially true on mobile, where South African users are often on 4G rather than fibre. A slow site does not just frustrate visitors, it also affects how Google ranks you, because page speed is one of the signals search engines use to decide which sites to show first.

It does not work on mobile

Pinching and zooming to read text, buttons too small to tap accurately, menus that do not open properly: these are all signs a site was designed for desktop and never properly adapted for phones. According to Statista, the majority of internet traffic in South Africa now comes from mobile devices. If the experience on a phone is awkward, you are losing the majority of your traffic before they see what you actually offer.

The design no longer reflects your business

Design trends move on, and so do visitor expectations. A site with cluttered layouts, small low-quality images, or fonts and colours that feel like they belong to an earlier era of the internet sends a signal, whether intended or not, that the business behind it might be just as outdated. For service businesses competing on trust, that impression can be the difference between an enquiry and a visitor who quietly moves on to a competitor.

Visitors cannot find your contact details

If a visitor has to hunt for a phone number, scroll to the bottom of a page to find an email address, or fill in a long form with no obvious next step, you have added friction at exactly the moment they were ready to act. Every extra step between someone being interested and someone making contact is a chance for them to give up. A clear, repeated call to action, a phone number, a WhatsApp link, a short contact form, should appear wherever a visitor might be ready to reach out.

You are invisible on Google

Search your service plus your area and see what comes up. If your business does not appear anywhere on the first page, even for searches directly related to what you do, it means the people actively looking for your service right now are finding your competitors instead. This is one of the most common issues we find when auditing a new client's site, and it is usually fixable with focused SEO work rather than a full rebuild.

What to do next

None of these issues are unusual, and none of them mean starting from scratch. Often the existing site has good bones, the right services listed, reasonable content, but needs a focused round of design and development work to fix the things actually costing you enquiries. The first step is an honest look at what is happening on your site right now.
