What to look for when hiring a web designer in South Africa

Start with what you actually need

The single biggest factor in how smoothly a website project goes is how clear the brief is at the start. A good brief does not need to be a formal document, but it should cover the basics: what your business does, who your customers are, what you want the website to achieve, and any examples of sites you like or do not like. A web designer who asks good questions at this stage, rather than jumping straight to design, is usually a good sign.

What a good brief looks like

A brief does not need to be long. It needs to answer a few practical questions: what pages does the site need, what do you want visitors to do when they land on it, who are your main competitors, and do you have content and images ready or do you need help with those? Smashing Magazine is a widely respected resource in the web design industry, and its guidance on briefs consistently points to the same principle: the clearer you are about the outcome you want, the better the work you will get back.

You can see how we approach client projects by looking at our portfolio, which shows the range of businesses and project types we have worked on.

Questions to ask before you commit

Before agreeing to work with any web designer or agency, these questions will tell you a lot about what you are actually getting:

  • Will I own the website files and have full access to them? Some providers build sites locked to their own hosting account or platform, which makes it difficult to leave later if you are not happy.
  • What is included in the price, and what costs extra? Hosting, domain registration, SSL certificates, and content writing are sometimes included and sometimes billed separately. Get this in writing before work starts.
  • What happens after the site goes live? A website is not finished the day it launches. Ask what support is available if something breaks, and what it costs.
  • Can I see examples of similar work? A designer who has built sites for businesses like yours before will understand your industry's needs faster.
  • How will updates work? If you need to update content yourself, make sure the platform supports that and that you are shown how before handover.

Red flags to watch for

A few warning signs are worth taking seriously. A quote with no detail, just a single price and no breakdown of what is included, makes it hard to know what you are agreeing to. Pressure to sign quickly, before you have had time to think it over or compare options, is rarely a good sign. A portfolio that only shows screenshots with no live links, or links that no longer work, is worth questioning.

It is also worth being cautious of anyone who guarantees specific results, such as a number one Google ranking by a fixed date. Nobody can honestly guarantee this, and a provider who does is either misunderstanding how search engines work or not being straight with you. The Small Enterprise Development Agency advises small businesses to get written quotes from at least two providers before committing to any service contract, and this applies equally to web design.

Why local knowledge matters

Working with a web designer based in South Africa, ideally one familiar with your region, has practical advantages. They understand the local market, from how South African customers search and browse to which payment gateways and hosting providers work well here. They are also in a similar time zone, which makes communication during a project much easier, and they are reachable afterward if something needs attention.

The right web designer for your business is not necessarily the cheapest or the most expensive option. It is the one who took the time to understand your business during the brief, who gave you a clear, itemised quote, and who you can picture still being reachable a year after the site goes live.
